Our Founder Story: From a Curious Mind to a Global Mission

The Beginning

Mr. Phil Selwyn grew up in a rural family with deep roots in farming, engineering, and self-sufficiency. His father; a practical, hands-on engineer, sparked Phil’s early love for fixing engines and understanding how things work. From a young age, Phil wasn’t just curious; he was inventive, spending hours in the workshop building, modifying machines, and learning how they could serve people. That spirit never left him.

Years later, after building a successful business career, Phil was requested by a friend to see if he could solve a recurring water issue on his farm in Devon, UK -  a quiet property with a small spring running through it.  To his surprise, it had an old hydraulic ram pump attached. He didn’t know much about it until it stopped working.

Like any true engineer, Phil dove in. No instruction manual. No diagrams. Just observation, logic, and persistence.

What he discovered would change the course of his life.

A forgotten technology, capable of lifting water uphill 24/7, without electricity or fuel, powered only by gravity and the natural flow of water. It had limitations, yes, but that only intrigued Phil more, as a curious and determined innovator.

The Turning Point

Phil couldn’t stop thinking about it.

In a world where communities struggle to access clean water, where diesel is costly, and solar setups often fail in poor conditions…!

Why wasn’t this simple, brilliant solution being used in every rural village, farm, and water-stressed region?

That’s when Phil made a bold decision: To modernize, scale, and bring this technology to the world.

Courage and Endorsement – Thanks To His Mother

Phil's breakthrough moment did not come in a lab or a boardroom – it came at home thanks to his mother. Witnessing his early passion for innovation and prototypes, she introduced him to a nearby Scientist and Inventor friend (James Lovelock) who had encouraged Phil to pursue his innovations independently and was instrumental in raising awareness in Phil of future climate change issues due to the burning of fossil fuels. This inspiration and knowledge were always at the forefront of Phil's ambition to create and market environmental innovations that would benefit both customers and the world.

The Birth of WPT

Encouraged by this success, Phil refined the design, engineered it with modern materials, and launched Water Powered Technologies Ltd (WPT) — with a mission to deliver zero-energy water pumping to people everywhere. The result? The Papa Pump®: An internationally patented, injection-moulded hydraulic ram pump.

  • An internationally patented, injection-moulded hydraulic ram pump
  • Lightweight, durable, and runs without fuel, electricity, or solar
  • Capable of lifting water across long distances and high elevations — 24/7

From small farms in the UK to mountain villages in Nepal and remote cattle lands in Chile, the Papa Pump began quietly transforming lives, offering water independence without fuel bills or emissions.

What Drives Us Now

Phil’s vision has remained the same from the beginning!

Enabling clean water access to farmers and communities — in a way that’s sustainable, affordable, and long-lasting; to improve health, food security, and local economies.

Today, Water Powered Technologies Ltd (WPT) stands as a proud UK-based company with a presence in over 60 countries, delivering life-changing water access to the people who need it most.

WPT was founded to solve a global challenge: delivering clean water to hard-to-reach places — from hilltops to valleys, for communities, farmers, livestock, and villages — using a simple, permanent, and innovative solution.

We are trusted by farmers, local governments, NGOs, and change-makers who believe in real sustainability and real impact.
